More than a billion applications downloaded Christmas week

According to an existing report, over one billion applications were downloaded globally during the last week of 2011. That is an all-time record. Article resource: More than a billion apps downloaded in a week

Large payday for application producers

There was a 60 percent jump in the number of applications downloaded earlier in the month until the last week of the month. With 658 million mobile devices being activated on Christmas Day throughout the world, according to Slashgear, application developers were bound to have a huge payday. A Flurry Analytics report was released on Monday. It said that from Dec. 25 to Dec. 31, there were 1.2 billion app downloads, which is a record high.

The Flurry report was very clear. It said:

<blockquote>"The last week of the year, from December 25 through December 31, sees more iOS and Android device activations compared to any other week of the year... Christmas Day [is] the largest single device activation day of the year. ... For application makers, this holiday 'power week' is far more important than the run-up to Christmas itself."</blockquote>

All more than the world

The U.S. was by far the leader of the race, with 509 million apps downloaded. China ran a very distant second at 99 million downloads. The United Kingdom, with 81 million, came in 3rd. Canada, at fourth place, had 41 million downloads.

Not just for Christmas

As reported by Flurry, Christmas cannot possibly be the only reason behind the additional downloads considering “over 60% of the population consider themselves agnostic or atheist” in China. Flurry claims that the app downloads will skyrocket this year making the billion a week rate more common. However, that does not consider that fact that Christmas is celebrated as a secular holiday by millions of individuals who are not Christian in both China and the States. Also, China had the second highest number of downloads.

People still purchasing applications

The Android Market and Apple Application Store have had a ton of success since the beginning of Dec. 2010. The Apple store has had 18 billion downloads while the Android Market has had 10 billion with no signs of slowing down. If the app stores continue to sell like this, Flurry might be right about the market not slowing down.
